This intervention is the first one conducted on the Iberian peninsula, but it was already tried in Doctor Negrin University Hospital  in Grand Canary.

Specifically, intraoperaitonal radiotherapy managed by this system is a method novel for Spain, although in various European countries it has been conducted on a regular basis. In this sense, the international research group “TARGET¨ has studied this management method for breast cancer radiotherapy since 1998 and the study results show that the total number of recurrences is very low.

Among its particularities compared to other treatments is the fact that radiation is applied directly to the tumor bed, with open tissue, at the moment of surgical intervention after tumor removal.

It also presents advantages in terms of efficiency and precision allowing to treat the area with the highest risk of cancer reproduction with the great precision and at the depth of 1and 2 cm., without damaging the adjacent healthy tissue. The treatment is personalized and adapted to the risk.  

Applying intraoperational radiotherapy immediately after the tumor removal might reduce the conventional posterior radiation time that usually lasts six weeks. It even can be eliminated in case of selected patients with the low risk profile. 

The use of this method has important advantages for the patients not only in physical and psychological terms, but also in terms of time and cost savings due to the reduction of hospital visits.
